The last few weeks have been unlike any other for me. The visor above my steering wheel says it all. It’s packed with these little cards that I’ve been using to get in and get out of a hospital halfway across town day after day after day.
Through a comedy of errors and bad choices and maybe bad luck, health issues that seemed like passing showers for my mother became a hurricane worthy of the Gulf coast. The winds brought long lingering life choices, I saw coming in the distance, suddenly to the forefront. The storm nearly killed her, battering my family leaving debris everywhere.
There are many lessons I take away from all this but I’ll only share three here.
Put your house in order because things fall apart. At some point in your life you will rely on someone you love to decode your choices and your environment. Please give them a guide.
Be nice to medical personnel. Doctors and nurses and support staff are far from perfect but odds are good that they will come through for you or your family. Give them a break. And assume positive intent.
And above all, slow down. This one is tough for me because my head is filled with a thousand thoughts and echoes of thoughts at all times. But I’m trying to absorb the moment. Because when your loved ones go. They don’t come back. So hug ‘em if you got ‘em.
